The obverse displays a depiction of the "El Ángel", or Angel of Independence, which sits in the center of Mexico City and celebrates the start of Mexico's War of Independence. Victoria, the Roman goddess of victory, holds a laurel wreath in her outstretched hand. Her other hand grasps a broken chain, which symbolizes freedom. The background features two of Mexico’s most iconic volcanoes, Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl.
